Sustainability in SMEs
Strategy, Dual Materiality, Reporting, and Public Funding
Target Audience: Small and medium-sized organizations that want to have a sustainability strategy capable of answering the questionnaires of clients, funders, and co-funders.

Context
SMEs are being pressured by clients, financiers, and investors to demonstrate how their environmental, social, and governance practices are embedded in their businesses. Increasingly, large companies have their own ESG ratings for their suppliers, banks also conduct a similar analysis when granting credit, and public co-financing also has to analyze how the project to be financed does not significantly damage the environment. Although SMEs are not required by EU Directive to have a sustainability strategy, nor to report their actions, the pressure from market players is evident. Thus, the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG), which develops sustainability reporting standards, has published a proposal for a voluntary standard for SMEs to report their sustainability practices annually. This capacity building will help SMEs understand what they need to do to have a sustainability strategy, and how they can disclose their environmental, social, and governance practices, following the currently existing voluntary standard proposal. The possibility of financing sustainability strategies for SMEs is now a reality and an opportunity through the Portugal 2030 Program. Knowledge of and access to the various incentive systems constitutes a competitive advantage for companies and a way to start and/or leverage the sustainability journey of SMEs.
